This Saturday (Sept. 29th) our Eagle Scout Jesse
Gladhill will be installing an outdoor box turtle exhibit for our two non-releasable
box turtles. Our
box turtles will not be introduced into this exhibit until June 2013 when the
air temperature is over 70 degrees. This new exhibit will feature a circulated
pond, live plants, and a rain barrel. Once our box turtles are introduced into
this exhibit, they will live year round in the
exhibit. Please join us as we thank Jesse for all his
hard work creating this new home for our box turtles.

Nature Center Naming Contest
Eastern
Milk Snake
Our
nature center animals are not pets but they are cherished members of our nature
center team. We are currently accepting thoughtful Name suggestions for
our nature center animals. If you have a name suggestion for our Eastern milk snake in the above photo please e-mail us at: smatthews@frederickcountymd.gov.
Eastern Milk Snakes are slender, smooth snakes with reddish or brown
splotches on a gray or tan background. A
light “Y’ or “V” mark is usually just behind the head. The belly of this snake is white with a black
checkerboard color. The number and type
of splotches, body rings, and the scale pattern vary in different geographical
areas. Adults grow from 2 to 4 feet. Milksnakes
are secretive and like to hide under logs, bark, stumps, and the underground rodent burrows.
